The best cover-ups start with a fade

Ask any tattoo artist what limits a cover-up and they’ll tell you: the old tattoo underneath. Dark ink can only be hidden with darker, denser ink — which is why unfaded cover-ups end up bigger, blacker and bolder than anyone planned.

A short course of laser fading rewrites those rules. Lighten the old ink and your artist can work smaller, brighter and more delicate — the design you actually want, not the one the old tattoo dictates. It starts, as everything does at our tattoo removal clinic in Preston, with a £5 patch test.

1 · Patch test

£5, with Lauren. We assess the tattoo, test your skin and talk through the design you’re planning over it.

2 · Brief us

Bring the new design, or your artist’s brief. We fade the areas that matter to the level your artist needs — no further.

3 · A short course

Sessions six to eight weeks apart, usually far fewer than full removal. You’ll watch the old tattoo step back into the paper.

4 · Heal, then ink

Skin fully settled — follow the aftercare guide — then your artist takes over. Most want 6–8 weeks after your final session; they have the final say.

Your questions, answered

Do I need to remove my tattoo completely before a cover-up?

No — and this is the part that surprises people. A cover-up usually only needs the old tattoo faded, not gone, so your artist has a light base to design over. Fewer sessions, lower cost, same laser.

How many sessions does fading for a cover-up take?

Fewer than full removal — often noticeably fewer, because you’re lightening the ink rather than erasing it. Lauren plans the fade around your new design at your £5 patch test.

Should I talk to my tattoo artist before starting?

Ideally, yes. If we know the new design — its size, placement and how dark it will be — we can fade exactly the areas that matter and stop the moment your artist has what they need. We’re happy to work to their brief.

How soon after my last fade session can I get the cover-up?

Your skin needs to be completely healed and settled first — most artists want a minimum of six to eight weeks after your final session, and your artist has the final say. Rushing new ink onto recovering skin helps nobody.

Is fading cheaper than full removal?

Almost always, because you’re paying the same per-session prices — £40, £55 or £85 by size — for fewer sessions. Stopping early is the whole point.
