Laser Tattoo Removal Aftercare

The laser starts the work. The next six weeks finish it — here’s how to help.

Aftercare

Healing well is half the result

A good fade isn’t made in the clinic — it’s made in the weeks after, while your skin recovers and your body carries the shattered ink away. Treat the area like sunburn you actually respect, and it will repay you at every session.

This is the same guidance every client receives after treatment at our Preston clinic. Keep it somewhere handy, and if anything worries you, Lauren would always rather hear from you twice than not at all.

The timeline

What to expect, and when

Healing follows a rhythm. Knowing it in advance turns “is this normal?” into “right on schedule.”

The first few hours

Redness, warmth and that light-sunburn feeling. The white “frosting” fades within the hour. A cool compress over a clean cloth is soothing — ice directly on skin is not.

Days 1–3

Keep the area clean and dry. Mild redness and a warm, sunburn-like feeling are normal here — leave the area undisturbed to settle.

Days 4–14

Light scabbing may form as the skin recovers. Itching means healing; scratching means scarring. Balm on, hands off.

Weeks 2–8

The surface looks normal again while the real work continues underneath — your body is still clearing ink right up to your next session.

The rules

Aftercare do’s and don’ts

Nothing complicated — just consistency.

Do

  • Keep the area clean and dry for the first 48 hours
  • Apply the recommended balm to clean skin
  • Dress it loosely if clothing rubs the area
  • Use a cool compress over a clean cloth for comfort
  • SPF50 on the area once fully healed — every time it sees sun
  • Let any scabs come away in their own time

Avoid

  • Popping, picking or scratching — this is where scars come from
  • Pools, saunas, hot tubs and long soaks for the first few days
  • Hard training and heavy sweating for 48 hours
  • Sunbeds and direct sun on the treated area
  • Perfumed lotions, exfoliants or make-up over the area
  • Shaving over the area until the skin has fully settled
Sun

Why sun is the enemy of a good fade

Freshly treated skin is photosensitive, and sun exposure risks pigment changes that can outlast the tattoo itself. Worse for your schedule: we can’t treat tanned skin at full effect, so a week of sunshine can cost you a session.

Once healed, SPF50 on the area isn’t optional — it’s part of the treatment. Cover the area completely until then. Your fade, your timeline and your skin tone will all thank you — and if you’re mid-course, so will your session count.

Good to know

Your questions, answered

What should I put on my skin after laser tattoo removal?
Keep it simple: the soothing balm Lauren recommends, applied to clean, dry skin. Nothing perfumed, nothing exfoliating, no make-up over the area until it has fully settled.
What does the skin look like after a session?
Straight after, you will see a temporary whitening that fades within minutes, then redness and a warm, sunburn-like feeling for a day or two. Keep the area clean, dry and protected and it settles on its own — just don’t pick or scratch it.
When can I exercise, swim or use a sauna again?
Give it a few days. Sweat, pool chemicals and hot-tub bacteria are all irritants to freshly treated skin. Gentle movement is fine immediately — it’s heat, friction and soaking you’re avoiding.
How long does skin take to heal between sessions?
The surface usually settles within one to two weeks. Underneath, your body keeps clearing ink for much longer — which is exactly why sessions are spaced six to eight weeks apart.
What are the warning signs I should contact you about?
Spreading redness, increasing heat or swelling after the first couple of days, pus, or feeling feverish — any of these, get in touch with the clinic on 01772 915 865 and see your GP. Genuine problems are rare, but they’re never something to wait out.
